Simple patterns are a fun way to jazz up a manicure, and I think they look awesome whether you do them on all of your nails or only use them on one or two as accents. Usually my patterns are done by stamping but today I was inspired by the design on an ottoman in my living room and decided to create it from scratch. Some dots and stripes later and voila, a lovely manicure that looks way more complex than it is! How did I do it? Check under the cut to find out!

Still trying to catch up on the prompts for The 31 Day Challenge! Today I have my fill for Day 25: Inspired by Fashion.
I love drawing inspiration from dresses and collections that cross my dashboard on tumblr, so that's where I decided to go for my fashion inspired nails for today. Unfortunately I can't find the original gown or designer but I had made a mock-up of this design when I first saw it and was holding on to it waiting for the right opportunity to put it into action. Well, today's the day!

I've gotten myself a bit behind in these prompts, but I'm still aiming to get them done. I burnt myself out a bit and had to take a few days to just do nothing. But I'm back and today I have my fill for Day 24 of the 31 Day Challenge: Inspired by a Book! What book inspired me? Haha.... You'll have to check under the cut to find out!

This one is a bit late coming, sorry for that. I did it this morning (yesterday morning technically) but didn't have the energy to edit/upload before I went to work. Better late than never though, I guess. The theme for Day 23 was Inspired by a Movie and I ended up going with a Pirates of the Caribbean for my movie... I had a bunch of pirate themed stamps, so why not! And to push it that extra mile I used exclusively shades from OPI's Pirates of the Caribbean Collection (which is my all-time favourite collection EVER). Let's take a better look...

So I had intended today's design to be a lot more simple then it ended up... Originally I was just going to re-create Katy Perry's outlined nails from the Dark Horse video, but when I got home late last night and was sitting down to do them my brain went "NOPE. Neon leopard print and lettering (that you've never done). It'll be fun! Do it. Go." And so here we are! My look for Day 22: Inspired by a Song.

So this one takes a bit of explanation. The theme for Day 21 of The 31 Day Challenge is Inspired by a Color. Well, the colour I was inspired by was Julep Margot - a stunning gold foil. And every time I use Margot I'm reminded of my cousin's adorably happy baby Margo. So I decided to do a manicure designed for her, using a cute elephant animal print I found online. Maybe when Margo's fingernails are bigger than pebbles I can recreate this for her. :)

The window just opened for Julep Maven selections for October, so I put this post together as quickly as I could so you could see what we have. :) Halloween is always a fun month for nails and Julep has surprised us with two special boxes this month (in addition to the normal profiles) packed with polish and nail vinyls! There are also three new beauty products for the month, including two new variations on a popular item! Check them all out under the cut!

You know how when you were little there were people you were "friends" with because your families were close or lived nearby so you didn't really have a choice? But in reality the two of you basically hated each other and couldn't wait to grow up so you could grow apart? Yeah, that's me and water marbling. As a nail blogger I feel I've been pushed into a relationship with the technique because it's one of the core looks in a standard bloggers arsenal but in reality I hate hate hate it. I can never get it to work consistently, and I'm impatiently waiting for the day when water marbling becomes the new crackle polish. It'll happen some day, right? (Please don't kill my dream.)
tl;dr version: I hate water marbling, and I'm sad that it was the theme for Day 20 of The 31 Day Challenge. So here is my sad attempt, and let's all move past this little blip and look towards tomorrow's fill instead. M'kay? M'kay.

First off you should know that I loooooove galaxy nails. I love doing them, I love looking at them, and I love seeing the designs other people come up with for them. In my opinion it's almost impossible to mess up a galaxy mani. Do a black (or white if you're making it pastel) base, sponge on some colours, add some sparkle, and ta-da you have a basic galaxy mani! I had originally intended to do some constellations on top of my galaxy but time wasn't on my side today so we'll have to box that idea for a later mani. Ah well! :)

I'm in a bit of a blahh place emotionally these days, and I find that when I'm feeling this way it's reflected in my nails. Case in point: the theme for The 31 Day Challenge today was Half Moons and as you can see my fill turned out fairly dark and gothic. Not that this is a bad thing, it's just not at all what I had pictured doing for this fill! Ho hum, oh well.
As always, more details after the cut.

Day 17 of the 31 Day Challenge! Let's do this!
Today's theme was glitter, and I decided it was finally time to try my hand at loose glitter. Now that I've done it all I can say is DAMN. That's a lot of clean-up. But it's done, and it looks lovely, and though it's definitely a process I have to work on streamlining I love the results. To make this fill as glitter-ific as I could I also did a bit of glitter placement on my alternate nails because really you can never have too much glitter.

Day 16 of The 31 Day Challenge asked for a Geometric Print, and I knew from the get-go that I wanted to try doing some more stamping decals. This attempt was moderately more successful than my previous attempt but I think I still have some work to do. Either way it did the job, and I'm pretty content with my fill for this theme. :) Let's take a better look!

Today's theme for The 31 Day Challenge is Delicate Print. I decided to go fairly simple and did some lace stamping with some Konad designs. I feel like this fill is a bit of a palette cleanser considering the bold and/or bright designs I've been doing recently. Sometimes it feels nice to slow it down and use some nice soft neutrals, don't you agree? :)

Hello hello! Today the theme of The 31 Day Challenge was Flowers, and I decided to go with something bright and bold and fun. I call these flowers childlike not to insult them, but because as a child I think I would've thought these candy-bright flowers were the BEST. I wanted something a bit different for the base so I did them over a some white colour blocking and negative space. Let's take a closer look!

Day 13 for The 31 Day Challenge is Animal Print. In real life you will rarely if ever see me wearing leopard print on my clothing. I find it a bit tacky. On my nails? LOVE IT. Leopard print is one of those designs that's so simple to do but that looks so nice when you're done. I had intended to do some different prints for this challenge fill (giraffe and zebra if you must know) but once I started doing leopard spots I just couldn't stop!

I wore a sweater and boots to work yesterday and I was happier than a pig in mud. Fall is the best season, hands down. Not to hot, not too cold, super cute clothes, warm or jewel-toned colours... Perfection. :) In honour of fall my look for Day 12 of The 31 Day Challenge 2014 is a warm and inviting plaid using some of the shades from my September Square Hue box. So grab a mug of tea or hot chocolate and then check under the cut for more info and pics!

We've made it to the Styles section of The 31 Day Challenge! First up: polka dots!
I wanted to go with something a bit different than a standard full-coverage dotticure, so I played around last night and organically came about to doing this simple mandala on my nails. I just started making dots and patterns and this is where it ended up. Drawing and colour mandala's are supposed to help with personal growth and re-balance, so I think they're a perfect addition to my self-care manicures.

Meet Lucy - She is into shapes and stuff
Creativity is a lot like looking at the world through a kaleidoscope. You look at a set of elements, the same ones everyone else sees, but then reassemble those floating bits and pieces into an enticing new possibility.
I love MoYou London stamping plates and I'm really excited about their upcoming collection: The Kaleidoscope Collection! It'll be released this Friday (September 12th) and it has 6 plates in total. Take a look at all 6 of the designs below and let me know which one you're looking forward to the most!
Keeping it simple today because I literally had two hours to do my nails, photograph them and write up this post. This challenge is definitely keeping me on my toes! For Day 10: Gradient Nails I decided to do a simple gradient with some of the Maybelline Bleached Neons from this summer. Can't ever go wrong with a bold summer sunset-y gradient in my opinion! Add some circle holographic "snow" and we're good to go! I think it's a perfect representation of the ridiculous weather we're having in Canada... I'm pretty sure my cousins out west had snow the other day! Ridiculous! Well Calgary fam, this one's for you. :)

I feel like the first rule of daily challenges should be: thou wilt not fall in love with a design. Because I love this look so much and it's breaking my heart to think about having to take it off for tomorrow's fill. I guess I'll just have to enjoy it while it's here, and document it with lots and lots of pictures! I can always order more decals and re-create it in the future... There! I feel better already thinking about that! :)
So let's look at my fill for Day 9: Rainbow Nails!
Monday, 8 September 2014
When I was trying to think of what to do for metallics the first thing that came to mind was my chrome Sally Hansen Color Foil polishes, so of course I had to put those to use. My family always says more is better so to add even more metallic to this look I added a glitter-packed topper for a bit of extra sparkle! I'd like to think if a robot wanted to get their nails done this is the kind of thing they would go for. Haha.

I picked up a package of Essence Nail Art Trend Paper Print Manicure (aka printed designs for newspaper nails) and Essence Transfer Solution last year and decided that if ever there was a time to give it a try it was for a Black & White Nails challenge fill. Throw on some free handed colour blocking and some studs and we've got ourselves a manicure!

Day 6 of The 31 Day Challenge! Let's do this! Today I was inspired by Hey, Darling Polish! and her kick-ass freehanded pattern abilities. I really want to get better with my freehand art and honestly this challenge is the perfect opportunity. I spent some time on pinterest and eventually decided to copy the general design from this pattern - who can resist a sleepy octopus!
Let's take a better look!

The theme for Day 5 is Blue Nails, and to be honest this design took forever for me to figure out and be satisfied with... I have come up against an inspiration wall already. It's only been 5 days, but there you have it. The only thing I knew going into it was that I wanted to use one or more of my new Color Club Halo Hues (I may have bought the entire 12-piece set online while I was sick). A few hours and a few corrections and then... It was time to figure out how to photograph a holo polish. Because that's not something I've had to do before! A few more hours, three different lighting setups, and I'm happy enough with what I have to share.

A few days later than usual but here's a look at my favourite August nail posts from Instagram! I did quite a few nails for friends last month, and there's also a look in the middle of one of my fav nail designs from this month (which hasn't made it to the blog yet, but it's coming!). Also some behind the scenes looks at my one-stroke flower design - what you can see is the difference one coat vs two coats makes!
If you have questions about what specific shades or items are you can check the originals on instagram or leave me a comment here and I'll let you know. And as always, feel free to leave links to your own instagram account in the comments of this post so I can check it out. :)
I've made it to Day 4 of the 31 Day Challenge! Step by step I'm making it through! Today I bring you Day 4: Green Nails, I think it's my favourite so far. You can't go wrong with good ol' colour blocking. I also got to use one of my all-time favourite polishes to get this look. What colour is that? Check under the cut to find out!
Wednesday, 3 September 2014
Another day, another fill for the 31 Day Challenge! The colour of the day is yellow and this look actually came about because I made a mess I had to cover up that kind of took on a life of it's own. This is one of those designs that I feel could have gone a step further (maybe by adding a third colour?) to make it fully complete... A lot of times I feel like I stop designs a step before they're truly finished, but maybe that's just me. Either way I'm moderately happy with how this turned out!

It's day 2 of The 31 Day Challenge 2014, and today's challenge was to do orange nails. Orange is not a colour I tend to favour for nail art, so I was at a bit of a loss for what to do. I started off the same way I did for Day 1: Red Nails in that I grabbed a shade that stood out to me in my collection and let the inspiration take hold from there... Curious about how I got this look? Check below the cut!

Today marks the start of 2014's 31 Day Challenge! Day 1: Red Nails. I was at a bit of a loss for where to start so I went through my collection to find a red that spoke to me and then tried to think about what came to mind when I thought of the colour red. Hearts? Hearts!
