Nail School Module 1 // Learning About the Nail Industry

This first week was just a refresher for me and it was pretty short (like this post!). I previously completed this module in full so I decided just to review the materials but not to re-take the test. I got perfect the first time so why try my luck, right? :)

Nail Art // Jewel Tone Leadlighting with OPI, NOPI and Born Pretty Store

I did this mani ages ago and just now found the pictures on my computer! Ah, man! Better late than never though, I guess. :) This is one of my all-time favourite leadlighting looks and believe it or not it came from just fooling around on my nails! Happy accidents are the best in my opinon. Just playing around and then BAM: amazingness!

Nail School // Re-Starting at TAOND aka My Procrastination Has No Bounds

So I've been sitting on this post for a while and now feels like the right time to get into it. You might remember my post from a couple years ago where I announced that I was starting the online nail tech program through The Academy of Nail Design (which is based in Canada). I did start and it was awesome, but then like with all things (my blog name isn't just a joke) my procrastination kicked in and before I knew it two years had gone by and I hadn't done anything more. TWO YEARS!

Since I first made that post I've been getting steady emails about it. "How did you like the program?" "Did you ever finish?" "Do you think it would be a good fit for me?" And generally my response was the same: I liked what I did of it, I haven't had time recently, let me know how it goes for you! And honestly, I got tired of not being able to say more about it.

There is obviously interest in the program and in my opinions about it, and I still stand behind the original reasons I gave for enrolling online instead of doing an in-person program: it's convenient for me, the price is right, and it will help me build on the skills I already have. So I had to ask myself "Why the hell aren't I still doing it?!" And to be honest I had no real reasons not to! Which means it's time to light a fire under my butt and get back in gear! No more excuses!

Swatch Comparison // Ceramic Glaze Impulsive vs China Glaze Flying Dragon

* Contains Press Samples

Today I'm sharing a post that I'm pretty excited about. It's been a while since I've done a true comparison post and they're always fun for me to do! :) And I've heard from readers that they're fun to look at from your end too, so it's a win-win for everyone!

Today's competitors are both from the same parent company so it makes sense that people would wonder if they were the same polish re-bottled and re-branded... Well, I think I can give you a confident answer to that question, so keep reading below to find out!

Swatch // China Glaze Flying Dragon

Swatch of China Glaze Flying Dragon

I have a quick swatch post to share with you today! This lovely is China Glaze Flying Dragon, which is one of those polishes I knew by name but never bothered to pick up for myself until recently.

If I was naming it I would have gone with something different I think, though... Something with the word raspberry in it maybe? Flying Raspberry? The Raspberry Dragon? Maybe it's a good thing I'm not the one naming polishes haha.

Swatches of the Essie 2016 Resort Collection

Hey loves! We're well into spring and I'm just getting my butt in gear to share these swatches with you. Ah well! I think they're awesome staple shades that are fit for any season so hopefully you don't mind. :)

I'm never especially enthusiastic about Essie's resort lines but this year I can say they at least brought us some nice bold basics. There's a colour for every skin tone and mood in this quad in my opinion... Want a bright bold blue to wear to the beach? Got you covered! Want a soft mint shade to wear out on a lazy Saturday? We have that too! Check all four polishes out below and then let me know which would be your go-to this season!

Swatch for Pantone Color of the Year 2016: Rose Quartz // Essie French Affair

Swatch of a soft pink nail polish

Continuing my post from last week where I showed you my pick for the representation of Serenity, this week I bring you my pick for Rose Quartz! I went with Essie French Affair which is a polish I've had for ages and one that gets quite a bit of wear. :) I think it's just the right shade of soft pink to go with the second Pantone Color of the Year for 2016.

Check out more on this shade below!

Nail Art // Artificial Nails + Jazzed-up Stamped Chevrons

Chevron stamping with MoYou London Artist Plate 17 over dark blue

Some days you just wanna do nail art but your nails are broken. Today I decided to try doing a full mani on top of some Nailene artificial nails and while I like the design I ended up I feel kinda :/ over how the falsies look. Oh well. Live and learn!

This was also a successful attempt at stamping decals for me! You have no idea how psyched that made me feel, haha. Check under the cut for more pics and info.

Nail Art // Cherry Blossoms for When Colors Collide

Cherry blossom nail art with pink and brown polish

I love participating in group challenges, and one of the newest groups I've joined is When Colors Collide -- a group of wonderful people who complete a nail art challenge every two weeks with a certain selected combo of colours!

This week we did a colour combo that really inspired me: pink and brown! I've wanted to try my hand at a cherry blossom-type design for a long time and this was the perfect opportunity. Check under the cut for a breakdown of how I put this look together and some extra pics!

Swatch for Pantone Color of the Year 2016: Serenity // Sally Hansen Babe Blue

Sally Hansen Babe Blue swatch

If you're reading this blog I'm going to assume you've heard about the Pantone Color of the Year. If you don't know, basically Pantone selects a colour every year that they feel symbolizes the mood and culture we're in for a given year. For nail and beauty bloggers it's basically a great excuse to do theme posts around the colour selected.

This year Pantone surprised us and selected not one but TWO colours: Rose Quartz and Serenity. Today I'm showing you my pick for the soft baby blue shade that Pantone calls Serenity, and it comes in the form of Sally Hansen Babe Blue. If you want to see my pick for Rose Quartz be sure to come back next Sunday! :)

Nail Art // Glittery Temporary Butterfly Tattoo Nails

* Contains Prev Press Samples

Butterfly nail art that uses temporary tattoos for the design

I have been wanting to try using temporary tattoos on my nails for ages now, but I finally found time to sit down and actually do it. Yay productivity! However, I didn't choose my colour combo as well as I could have, so even though the technique worked GREAT overall I think this is a quasi-nail fail. Ah well!

On to the nails!
