I have a bit of a different post for you today! Do you have a certain container or bag that you shove all your nail stuff in when you've finished painting but don't have time to put everything away in it's proper place? Mine is this bag from La Senza that tends to get used as a catch-all when I'm getting ready to go to bed and need to clean the desk (aka the cat's second bed) off in a rush. When everything is put away properly this bag only stores my core nail care items - the things that you know you're going to need to do your mani, kept in one convenient place. Well, I cleaned out all the randoms and just left the important things and now I've put those things into a short post for you! :)

I've never had a chance to try foil nails, so when Born Pretty Store agreed to send me a sheet of Holo Nail Foil (Pattern 58) I was really excited. Unfortunately it wasn't as easy to apply as I hoped, so while my final look isn't terrible it also isn't how I pictured it turning out. Oh well... Live and learn, right? :)

So the other week I finally got around to picking up my Julep namesake (or as close as I'm likely to get): Catherine. Red isn't usually my colour, but surprisingly I really really like this one! In real life it was lighter than the swatches on Julep.com, but it's also a tad deeper than the pictures here would have you believe. It's like a deeper and less-pink version of Julep Rose.

I have a bit of a nail fail to share with you today! I've been trying to build up the courage and motivation to attempt making my own stamping decals, and for whatever reason I decided that the time to do this was now. (And there was to be no backing down!) So I got all my materials lined up, made sure to dry between all coats while making the decals, was exxxxxtra careful peeling it off the plastic, and then...... I forgot to give my base coat proper time to dry. HAHA. All that hard work! And when I went to place my decal the still-wet base coat I used made the whole thing into a goopy mess. :( Arrrrghhhhh.

Today I have another review for you from Born Pretty Store! They sent me a lovely set of Feather Patterned Nail Decals (Pattern 1724). This was my first time using water decals so I was really excited to get started.... Unfortunately, from what you can see I also learned not to use Seche Vite with these decals the hard way. :/ Check below the cut to see what I loved (and what I didn't love) about these decals!

It's my party, and I'll paint cupcakes on my nails if I wanna! Hahah. :) That's right: it's my birthday today! Hooray! To celebrate I took the day off and am going out with friends later tonight. I also decided that it was time to try a design that I've been wanting to try for a while: cupcake nails! I gathered some of my favourite polishes, sat down, and gave it a try! Let's take a look at how they turned out!

The May Maven Selection window opened up yesterday! This is the month a lot of people were waiting for, since it brought with it the premier of the Julep Plié Wand. I won't go into it too much, but basically Julep has created a new ergonomic polishing brush. (You can find out more about it on their blog if you want.)
The wand comes in all of the normal polish boxes, and to make sure everyone finds a box they want there are 7 boxes to choose from this month. SEVEN. That's ridiculous, but awesome.
Julep also announced that as of June you will be able to upgrade to a fully customizable box (for more $$ of course) - this will be called Maven Luxe and you can find out more about it here.
Now, let's take a look at the May boxes!

Double-post day today, isn't that exciting! :) I always love digging polishes out of my stash for swatch posts because 90% of the time it ends with me falling in love with a shade I didn't even know I had. Case in point: China Glaze All Wrapped Up! I've had this shade since it came out last winter and for whatever reason it's never actually made it onto my nails until now. But now that it has I wish I could never take it off! Ahhh~!
I'll admit, my last fill for this challenge is a bit of a cheat... This is actually the base I put together for my Crackled Easter Eggs fill. But it was just so pretty I knew I had to put it up on it's own, too! And I like the idea of using it for my freestyle fill for this challenge because then it kind of keeps both posts together in a way. :) This look on it's own is soft and dreamy and perfect for spring.

Flowers flowers flowers! There's so many options to try when it comes to doing a flower fill in a nail art challenge... I decided to go with one I've never tried before: pansies! I was inspired by the wonderful tutorial done by The Little Canvas that I came across the other day, and I was pleased with how simple it was to put this look together. It left my nails looking bright and cheery and definitely spring-like!

The second theme for the Spring Renewal Nail Art Challenge was pastels. We all know that I love pastels so when it came to choosing what polishes to use I went with two of the new ones I picked up last week. This is actually the re-creation of a mani that I did for a coworker the other day - I just loved the combo so much I had to re-create it for myself! The look isn't in-your-face spring or Easter themed, but I still really like it and I'm really happy to be able to share it with you today. :)

New season means it's time to take part in a new seasonal nail art challenge. :) This challenge is called the Spring Renewal Challenge, and it's themed around Easter and spring. The topic for today: Easter Egg Nails! Rather than doing traditional designs I went with an abstract 'cracked egg' look, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Take a look below for more pics and info!

I have a nubs swatch to share with you from the vault today with one of the Essie shades I got on clearance at my local Shoppers Drug Mart! They've been having awesome clearance sales recently (a friend picked up 5 ORLY Gel polishes for $1 each for me last week!), and it has let me pick up some of the shades from previous collections that I liked but didn't love when they were released. Yay sales!

I received some lovely items to review from Born Pretty Store the other week and I'm excited to be able to share the first of them with you today. I don't have many stamping plates currently so I was really excited when I was able to get this one sent to me. When I saw the selection of skulls and bows on this plate I thought: we all like to look nice from time to time, so why should skulls be any different! Let's put them together!

I've been holding onto these guys for a few weeks now, and I finally got some time to sit down and swatch all of them for you. Julep released this set as a QVC Exclusive last fall for the Wizard of Oz's 75th Anniversary, and at the time they told us there was no plans to release the set through the Julep.com website. This made a lot of Mavens upset because it was such a pretty set, so you can imagine how excited people were when it showed up in the Secret Store this year!
You may have heard that I'm not a huge fan of the Wizard of Oz (and if you hadn't then you have now!) so even with all the hype I was only mildly excited when I picked this up. When I got the set in my hands I was a bit more excited (especially when I saw how holographic Tin Man was), but my OHMYGOSH THESE ARE GORGEOUS feelings didn't hit until I was able to swatch them. These are exactly the types of colours I love, and they all look lovely with my skin tone. I think this is my favourite set that Julep's ever put out! :) Let's take a closer look.

Can you believe this was my first L'Oreal Paris polish?! I was so surprised when I picked it up the other day and noticed I didn't have any other L'Oreal bottles in my stash. But what a choice for my first. Hidden Gems is a stunning multichrome textured glitter, though sadly the textured nature of the polish takes away any of those other multichromatic colours once the polish is out of the bottle and on to your nails. It's still lovely to look at, and I've swatched it for you both with and without top coat.

So I have a few lovely real-life friends who are bloggers (though to be honest we don't often share subject matter). My friend Christina runs a toy/doll blog called Christina Articulates, and my lovely friend Jill (who you've unknowingly seen featured in some of the "nails for my friends" posts on here) runs Talking Tiny Toys where she talks about and reviews toys and action figures. It's the latter friend who I want to introduce you to today, since the two of us are working together on a new feature we're calling Nerds&Nails. The premise is that we will work together to create linked posts based on one of the toys she has in her collection. So where she'll review the toy (nerd), I'll create a unique nail art design (nails!) to go with it! It's fun for both of us (since she tends to help me brainstorm my nerdy designs anyway) and gives us an excuse to work together. Hurrah!
Today we decided to collaborate on a theme that is familiar for both of us - Game of Thrones! Yes, it is the long-awaited return of my Game of Thrones Nail Art Series. And what a way to hit it off: with a collaboration as well as the season premier later tonight! We're starting with something inspired by the lovely Cersei Lannister, so take a look below for more shots of my design as well as a look at the toy that Jill chose to inspire this look. :)

June 21, 2016 - See an update on my progress here!
Hello hello! Exciting and possibly opinion-drawing post to share with you today! As you can see from the title of this post: I have decided to enroll in a nail tech program, but it's not the type of program you might expect. My decision came down to three things: location, availability and cost. I've been holding onto this secret for a while, and I'm happy to have started and to finally tell you about what's going on and why this is the path I've taken. :)

Hello hello! I am once again participating in a Finger Food's Theme Buffet Challenge. :) This week there were two themes we could choose from, and I decided to go with doing a monochromatic look!
March is over! Onwards to spring! :) Let's take a look at some of my favourite nail-related posts from over on instagram since there were quite a few last month that never made it over here.
To start with I want to point out my awesome shopping adventures from last month... In the bottom corner we have my first order of Nail Vinyls, and at the top we have my Julep Wizard of Oz Collection set (with Julep Tin Man swatched beside it - S T U N N I N G). Both of these products have posts coming up in the next week or so, so keep your eyes peeled. :) The other awesome shopping adventure was the picture in the top left... You can't quite make it out here, but that's a haul of 7 Quo by ORLY and Essie polishes for about $20 (and a savings of $57)!! Best. Day. Ever.
There's also a handful of looks I wore that never got properly photographed... I did a lot of "just for me" self-care manis this month. :) If you have questions about what specific shades are you can check the originals on instagram or leave me a comment here and I'll let you know.
As always, feel free to leave links to your own instagram account in the comments of this post so I can check it out. :)
