ProcrastiNails: My Julep Maven (June 2014) Customized Classic With a Twist Box Swatch and Review

This was the first month that Julep rolled out their fully customized boxes, and I decided to take both of the polishes in the original box (Ariana and Bergen) but swapped out my beauty item. I have to say I’m not super impressed with the additional time it (assumedly) takes to put the customized boxes together, though. As predicted it took longer than usual for the box to get here – it took the full three weeks whereas in the past even though they have estimated three weeks it’s only taken one or two. Hmmm.

Shipping aside the polishes are pretty nice this month, so let’s focus on the positives instead of getting stuck in the negatives.

The collection this month was called The Three Wishes Collection, and it was made up of fairly soft and shimmery polishes in a variety of finishes. The bonus gift we got this month was once again candy, though I LOVE pixie sticks (takes me back to grade 7!) so I was fairly happy with that.

Details/Instructions: All-natural blend of essential oils and Vitamin E hydrates and strengthens nails and cuticles. Extends the life of your manicure while leaving a glossy sheen. Use daily to soften rough cuticles and strengthen nails. The convenient roller-ball application allows you to take your Julep Essential Cuticle Oil everywhere you go.

Ingredients: Jojoba Seed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Castor Seed Oil, Rosewood Oil, Vitamin E, Lavender Oil, Ylang Ylang Oil.

The beauty item this month was Julep’s new Oxygen Smoothing Base Coat, but I just wasn’t feeling it so I swapped it out (yay customization!) for a bottle of Julep Essential Cuticle Oil. I’m actually in the process of testing this now (I’m using it and it alone for a full wek) so keep an eye out next week for the outcome from that. So far I can tell you it has a strong but pleasant scent and that Julep chose a nice combination of essential oils to add to it in terms of properties. The rest will have to wait until the full post is up!

Julep Ariana

Price: $14 ($11.20 Maven) for 8mL
Availability: Julep.com
Colour Profile
: Classic With a Twist
Description: Enchanted berry iridescent chrome
Finish: Metallic/Chrome

I love this polish! I would say it has more of a foil finish than a metallic or chrome, though. The first coat was very thin and streaky which worried me, but after three coats it built up to be fully opaque with a gorgeous glitter. I feel if Julep had thrown a few mid-sized hex glitters into this mix it would’ve been perfect. (This might seem like a random request, but I am forever wishing for Julep to get more adventurous with their polishes.) Either way it’s a lovely polish.

Julep Bergen

Price: $14 ($11.20 Maven) for 8mL
Availability: Julep.com
Colour Profile
: Classic With a Twist
Description: Hazy blue-grey shimmer
Finish: Shimmer

The shimmer in this polish is very subtle but it’s just enough to make it interesting (though I hesitate to call it a shimmer – seems more like a frost to me?). I definitely don’t have any other Julep polishes that look like this so that’s a bonus in my books! It applied really well and was opaque in three coats (though if you use thicker coats than I do you’ll be fine with two). Definitely satisfied with this one. 🙂

If you want to see what kind of colours and products were in the other boxes this month, check out my Selection Window post from May to take a look. 🙂

The polishes in this box were pretty and I’m excited to be trying out a new cuticle oil, but overall I never felt that “oomph” of excitement that I used to get from receiving my Julep box. :/ To be honest, I think a lot of it had to do with that darn shipping. Getting your box three days before the new window opens takes some of the fun out of it, since you don’t have time to be excited to see your new box before the excitement to choose your next box takes over. Hm.

We’ll see how the next two months go – I have one more pre-paid box remaining and then I have enough points for my next box, but beyond that I might have to leave it for a while until they get a better shipping system worked out. I know I wasn’t the only one annoyed with how long it took this month.

Anyway, enough of that. Let me know what you think of the polishes and the overall box… And if you have any Canadian beauty box suggestions (or boxes that ship to Canada without charging an arm and a leg for shipping – I’m not paying an extra $10), I wouldn’t be opposed to hearing about them. 🙂

Thanks for visiting!! xx
