July #instanails

Here's a round up of all my nail-related instagram posts from July. I'm going to be doing this at the end of every month, since I often post pics of my manicures in-progress or of casual manicures for friends that never make it to the blog. See my instagram for larger pics and more info. :)

Feel free to add a comment with a link to your own instagram, if you have one. I'd love to check them out!

Thanks for visiting! xx

Angela and The Living Daylights Glitter Tips

Doesn't that sound like a band? "Angela and the Living Daylights." Hahah. Well, it's not. It's this lovely colour combo of Julep Angela and OPI The Living Daylights. Gorgeous!

Nail Art // Step into Summer: Inspired by a Bathing Suit

I realized yesterday that it's almost the end of the month, which means the Step into Summer Challenge is wrapping up. I know I'm not going to get all of the fills completed but I knew I wanted to get the bathing suit fill in at the very least. And I knew exactly which bathing suit to use as an inspiration!

Cheeky Summer Collection Stamping Plates Mani and Review [pic heavy]

I love getting nail mail! I got a whole bunch of stuff that'll probably start showing up in posts over the next while, but for now I put together a review of the new stamps I just got. I've never tried Cheeky brand plates before, and honestly I was blown away by how good they are. This post has a run-down of all the designs in the Summer Collection (all 26 plates!) as well as a quick stamping mani I used to test the depth and quality of the designs.

For the mani I chose these cute little aliens because they have feet and spikes and teeth and eyes, and that seemed like a lot of details for a stamp to pick up. For an extra challenge I stamped them over Bump & Grind from the China Glazed Texture Collection (plus two layers of Seche Vite), and even with the extra texture all the details came through beautifully! WOW!

Soft Green Tribal Mani w/ Essie Navigate Her

I feel like I haven't been to creative with my designs recently, so I'm trying to get back into the detail game. With this mani I took a step I never thought I would: using acrylic paints. Shock! Horror! Hahah.

Joe Fresh Cinnamon and Bronze Bow Mani

My favourite part of doing swatches is being able to use them as bases for nail art as well. This design was done right after I did my Joe Fresh swatches when I thought to myself "Hmmmm... Bronze would probably pop really well if I put it on top of Cinnamon somehow..." That seemed like as good a time as any to try doing my first bow mani, so here we go!

Review: Julep's One-Step Polish Remover Pad

So I wasn't planning on even reviewing these pads, but I was so disappointed in the product that I felt like I had to say something about it. Looking at the result in my before and after pics blows my mind, and not in a good way. (Note that this is just my experience with these pads, so if anyone tried them and they worked great please let me know... 'Cause seriously! Grrr! So disappointed!)

Swatch-It Sunday: Joe Fresh Nail Polish in Cinnamon, Twilight and Bronze

When I was in Joe Fresh sometime last year I was surprised at the large selection of nail polish they had displayed. At the time these were 3 for $10 so how could I not get some! I was looking at them the other day and realized that aside from Cinnamon (which was one of the colours I used for my Weirwood Tree Mani) I haven't tried these out. So let's do that now!

Step Into Summer: Citrus Fruit! Om nom nom

This mani sucked up all of my energy. Not because it was difficult, but because I kept rushing things and it's super humid so nothing was drying and I kept messing it up. UGHH. Anyway, this is for the Step Into Summer Challenge, and is my submission for Favourite Summer Fruit. For me: citrus! Lemon, orange, lime and grapefruit. :3

This was actually my third try at this general look! The first I was doing a coloured-to-white gradient with fruits stamped and my gradient was being fussy. The second I tried doing a tape mani to divide the white from the colours with the stamps on top of that, and when I stamped it it smooooshed the other layers and gave them wrinkles. This was my third try, and I decided just to photograph it and be done with it. lol. The stamping is far from perfect, but that's a technique I'm still working on. :)

Pink and Black Colour Blocking Tape Mani

I was reading an article on Psychology Today about what I'm going to call "The Pink and Black Dilemma." (You can read it here if you are inclined - it's not too long.) It's the idea that we express our emotions in colour a lot of the time, and that the unique combination of pink and black is something that young girls in particular use to express being girly (pink) yet serious (black) at the same time. Think Avril Lavigne, or pink accessories with black skulls on them.

Here's a quote from the article that illustrates the idea:
"In my experience, pink and black together represent a dilemma for young people. How can I be girly and fun and silly while also being deadly serious and angry about so many things in my life? How can I enjoy my life now while knowing that one day I'll die? How can I manage to stay innocent when part of me wants to know everything? How can the pink part of me co-exist with the black?" - Luxmoore, Young People Up Close
Like the article says, this isn't an easy dilemma to resolve. I have so many thoughts on this idea, but this is a nail blog not a psych blog... So on to my fun and girly yet mature and serious mani! :) Hahah.

My Julep Maven (July 2013) It Girl Box Arrived Today! Tracy, Nadia and Angela (+ Blakely Add-On) Swatches and Review [pic heavy]

Getting packages delivered is always a pain. I work late so I'm rarely up when things get delivered, and then I have to bolt awake and rush to get to the door. If I don't make it before the mail person leaves I have to wait at least a day and then travel to the nearest post office outlet (a 20 minute walk). Today I literally fell out of bed in my rush to get to the door, which was hilarious. But it doesn't matter because I made it to the door today and you know what was waiting for me? My July Julep Maven Box! Yaaaaaaay!

Pride Mani! Textured Rainbow Gradient! L O V E

My love affair with textured polish continues! Sally Hansen's Sugar Coat in Sugar Fix is lovely on it's own, but the fact that it's a pure white means that it's just begging me to use it as a base for some fun gradient combos. And what's more fun than a rainbow gradient, especially for Pride? Nothing!
